NFC West Rivals - St. Louis Rams

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

The Rams long road back to respectability starts with their round of OTA’s. They were 0-2 against the Arizona Cardinals during the 2008 season and will probably be looking for some redemption in that area as well. Marc Bulger will continue to be there main man at starting quarterback and that was evident by them passing on Marc Sanchez, the next glamor quarterback from USC.

Defensive End Leonard Little appears to be back all the way from a prior hamstring injury. Wide receiver Donnie Avery continues to improve and is looking better and better. But man, the Rams have got to be missing the once dynamic duo of Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt, Holt is now with Jacksonville. Word is Tye Hill appears to be finally adapting to NFL coverage and his confidence is growing, hope so Tye with this being your fourth NFL season. Linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa was released recently because new head coach Steve Spagnuolo wants bigger linebackers, has interests from the Bills, Bears and Eagles. Hmm….Bigger linebackers? Pisa had 135 tackles, 3 sacks and two forced fumbles in 2008.

NFC West Rivals - San Francisco 49ers

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

It looks like teams are wrapping up their OTA’s (Organized Team Activities) including our very own Arizona Cardinals. But I wanted to focus on one of our division rivals who happen to be the San Francisco 49ers. You’ve got to be wondering what Mike Singletary has cooking up his sleeve, is he going to go all out this season and try to wrestle away the NFC West Division Crown from the Cardinals? Maybe he still needs more firepower on offense, which is why they drafted Michael Crabtree at WR.

As with Mike, word is he had already gotten on his team midway through their first OTA and told them to pick up their intensity level. Like I said in my first breakdown on the 49ers, Mike Singletary doesn’t mess around and will have this team prepared come opening day. And guess who we play on opening day? You guessed right, the 49ers. This will be a statement game right off the bat. It’s a division game, we just came off the Super Bowl and the 49ers feel they can contend for the division title. Hey, it’s on.

St. Louis Rams - Record in 2008 (2-14)

How the once mighty have fallen. It’s hard to imagine these Rams with the Rams from the “Greatest Show On Turf” days. DE Leonard Little is the lone remaining player from their Super Bowl days. Talk about a team in transition. I think the Rams have lost their past identity and haven’t discovered quite yet what they want their new identity to be. A passing team, a running team, a defensive stalwart maybe? Who knows, but I do know they just aren’t very good right now. The Edward Jones Dome used to be a noisy rocking place and now it’s pretty quiet, that’s what happens when you don’t win anymore. But the fans in St. Louis are great fans, they give the Rams a loyal fan base which is something they lacked especially after moving to Orange County, CA in 1980. Man, that was a long time ago.

January 15, 2005. That’s a significant date for the Rams in my opinion. Why? Because they took a drubbing from the Mike Vick led Atlanta Falcons and got beat 47-17 and haven’t been back to the post-season since then. I watched that game and still can see Marc Bulger crawling on his hands and knees after getting swamped from that fierce Falcons pass rush, it was an onslaught. I don’t think the franchise has fully recovered from that game, that happens sometimes, teams won’t admit it but it does happen. The Rams future is still in the hands of Marc Bulger though, there’s no doubting that especially after passing up on Mark Sanchez, QB - USC. They better be right because they potentially passed up on a QB that could have led them for the next 10-15 years. We’ll see, we all know the NFL Draft is an inexact science. Just ask Ryan Leaf.

San Francisco Forty Niner’s - Record in 2008  (7-9)

Ok, I can’t resist this one, so I’m going to say it, San Francisco Forty Whiners.  There’s something I just don’t like about the 49er’s. Maybe it’s a little bit of envy of all those Super Bowl trophies they own. Nah, that’s not it. Maybe it’s because Jim Rome used to refer to the fans up in Northern California as the “Nocal Battery Chucks”. Nah, that’s not it either. The reason is, they always seem to find a way for being good, they’ve been not so good lately, but the potential is there again. Like the Seattle Seahawks they will be starting the season with a new head coach in Mike Singletary.

Seattle Seahawks - Record in 2008 (4-12)

Bitter rivals? Not now, not yet. But don’t think that can’t happen, I mean we play in the same division so that always lends itself to heated match-ups. But there’s something about their new head coach. Jim Mora. I think that he brings back an intensity that deeply started to wane in the last days of Mike Holmgren’s regime. Look, I think this guy can flat out coach, he had the Falcons on the brink of good things and I’m not sure what really went wrong. Maybe it was not being able to get Mike Vick to settle down in the pocket and play within the system.

Jim Mora is going to give this team a shot in the arm or a jolt if you will. They have a good nucleus of talent and if it wasn’t for Dominique Rodgers-Cromarties’s (DRC) key interception at Qwest Field last season we could have been 8-8. Not to say that Mike Holmgren wasn’t tough, but Mora just brings all that much more intensity. Of all the teams in the NFC West as of right now, and I know it’s still early in the off season, the Seahawks are the team I’m keeping my eye on the most.
