Arizona Cardinal Player Profile - Steve Breaston

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Drafted in 5th Round of 2007 NFL Draft - WR/KR - Michigan Wolverines - 6′0″ 189 lbs

At the Big House in Ann Arbor Michigan, Steve Breaston flashed some big-play capability. The area where he really shined was on special teams though, owning school records for punt return and kick-off return yards, with 5 touchdowns to add into that mix. His 156  career receptions are fifth most in Michigan history. He also owns the Rose Bowl record which was set on January 1, 2005 with 316 all purpose yards.

When Steve Breaston was drafted by the Cardinals, you and I were probably thinking the same thing, all purpose kind of player, a utility guy, jack of all trades. The Cardinals were probably thinking the same thing. But sometimes fortunes have a funny way of turning and changing quickly, and that’s what occurred with Steve Breaston, it happened to be called an opportunity. In all professional sports, sometimes a player has to wait for an opportunity to really showcase his talents, sometimes it may be due to another players injury, it could be another players contract, it could be a host of reasons.

Cardinal Spotlight - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Around these parts in Arizona, for all the loyal and die-hard Cardinals fans, he’s just simply known as DRC. I can still remember when the Arizona Cardinals held their press conference for DRC to introduce him to the media, which was on a Thursday which the Cardinals always do. Kind of a quirk they have I guess, everyone else introduces their number one picks usually on Monday or Tuesday after the draft, but not the Cardinals. Bless them, they like to keep us in suspense I guess.

Let me just say something about their 2009 NFL Draft class. That was a kick-butt draft Rod Graves and Co. had, from top to bottom that draft really set the cornerstone for this franchise in my opinion. But they’ve had good drafts for the last several years anyway, but this draft got them primed and poised for bigger and better things to come. Let’s get back to DRC. During the introduction to the press he was so humble and soft spoken this guy, it was, “yes sir” and “no sir’, you just couldn’t help but to like him right away. Humble would be a good word to describe him too. But don’t let that quiet confidence fool you though, this man is an assassin, not like a Jack Tatum type of assassin, but a ball-hawking game changing shut-down corner type. So smooth with world class speed and make-up ability, it’s just crazy.

Arizona Cardinals Running Game - To Run More, Or Not To Run More

Monday, May 18th, 2009

That is the question. Don’t worry guys, I’m not going to get all philosophical on you, after all this is a sports blog. But it is a topic that has been coming up quite a bit lately on discussion boards, so allow me to offer my opinion. First off let’s start with Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt, he’s a smart guy and knows how to utilize the players and talent he has on his team. He’s flexible and doesn’t try to force a certain system on the players he has, as opposed to making his personnel adopt to a system that doesn’t fit there skills. When he first arrived I think Whiz wanted to foster a run and run first approach, but after arriving he realized that the run game wasn’t moving the chains like our passing game, so he went with and stuck with, passing first and passing often mentality.

Make no mistake, that’s been our bread and butter, we have arguably the best tandem of starting receivers in the NFL with Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin, not to mention Steve Breaston as our third wideout, who also gained a 1000 yards. That’s a vaunted passing attack if I’ve ever seen one. That was Like Winslow, Jefferson and Joiner all over again, but what did they win? Passing games are exciting, beautiful to watch at times, almost ballet like. I mean it’s exciting to watch a running back take a handoff and go the distance for 70, 80 or 90 yards, but when you see a perfectly thrown 80 yard bomb, that’s a thing of beauty to see. It’s quick and it’s 6 right in your face.  That pass play just shaved a whopping 7 seconds off the game clock. It can be devastating to the defense to get scored on that quick, but for the team that just scored that quick, their defense was huffing and puffing on the sidelines still trying to catch their breath, now it’s back on the field.

Cardinal Spotlight - Kurt Warner

Kurt Warner: Man, Myth or Legend

Sound kind of dramatic? It should really. Kurt Warner’s career is full of dramatics, that’s because he thrives on the challenge. What separates players like these from the rest of the pack is hard to decipher, if you knew, you could coach players on it and you’d have a bunch of Kurt Warner’s on your team. But we only have one. There is only one Kurt Warner in the whole NFL and the Arizona Cardinals are blessed to have him. When I watch this guy every Sunday, I relish every snap, he’s not that same young guy from 1999 you know.

Just about everyone knows about his humble days stocking shelves at the Hy-Vee store, so I won’t bore you with that. Ok, I’m going to admit something here, I was even kind of leery about Kurt taking over the reigns full-time. It just kind turned out that way I guess, especially after watching the ball security problems coming back in 2006 and rearing it’s head again some in 2007. It appeared too that the ball just wasn’t coming out of Kurt’s throws with the same velocity either, was it the hand again? But he adjusted and took to wearing gloves. That was a remarkable thing to do, to ask a player who has never worn gloves to all of a sudden wearing gloves on a full-time basis. It helped, a lot. It also showed he was willing to alter and make changes to his game, not that easy to ask of from a veteran player sometimes. I’ve have some career stats for Kurt below, not his full career, but numbers to make a point.

Arizona Contract Impasse - Darnell Dockett

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Geesshh! Should I say here we go again? My goodness gracious Darnell Dockett (DD) but we know you’re coming off a Super Bowl appearance and all, but. We all know you have a motor that doesn’t stop. You play with a kind of reckless abandon and energy that’s kind of unique, like your own trademark. I see you running all over the field chasing down backs and receivers from behind. Man, that’s hustle. That hit you put on Zak Keasey in the first game of the 2008 season was wood baby, I can still hear that crack on his helmet to this day, remember the fumble that resulted from that hit?

2008 - The Sleeping Giant Awoke

sb43cards3Pinch me will ya. But did we all see the 2008 Arizona Football Cardinals in the greatest sporting spectacle of all time? You mean to tell me out of 32 teams that started out from mini-camps, through rigorous training camp and through pre-season injuries, that the Cards ended up being the representatives for the NFC in Super Bowl 43?

You bet, in front of the largest television audience of all time for a super bowl. In arguably the greatest Super Bowl game ever played. What an incredible ride it was, the memories from that magical season will last a lifetime. The Cards were about an inch away from a ticker-tape parade in Downtown Phoenix if it weren’t for Santonio Holmes barely, and I mean just barely getting his right toe to touch the turf.

Hello to all the loyal die-hard Arizona Cardinals Fans! This blog is going to be about our favorite NFL team. This will be a no holds barred hardcore fan site. Whew, I’ve got a little catching up to considering what a heck of a year the Cardinals had. Going back to training camp of 2008, would you have honestly thought that the Cards would be in Super Bowl 43 representing the NFC? I sure as the heck didn’t, I was just hoping for a 9-7 or 10-6 record and a play-off appearance, but they exceeded just about everyone’s expectations.

I hope you like this blog, it will be updated almost daily if not daily about important information and what else is happening in the NFL, especially with our rivals in the NFC West Division. I especially want to take the time and give a big Thank You to all of the fans who supported the Cardinals. The noise at the home games was deafening. That is what you call a true home field advantage. Keep bringing the noise in 2009.
